KEEP OUR NUMBER JUST IN CASE
Copyright © Susan Werner
Description: Guitar

I said something but you did not hear it
As you lit your American Spirit
And listened to the voice inside your head
The little voice of the shaker and mover
The little voice that calls everyone over
As you march on to fame and leave all your footsoldiers for dead

Yeah you're such a divine supreme being
You were looking at me but not seeing
As you ran the calculations in your brain
Whether I was a plus or a minus
Whether I was worthy enough of your heist
To share your small and ???

Well I don't imagine you'll ever join the human race
It would surprise me if you did
I don't imagine you'll ever join the human race
But keep our number
Keep our number just in case

And you ran a self-conscious hand through your tresses
And struggled with small politesses
From which you'd ordinarily be exempt
You said you liked how I played the piano
Asked how it was growing up in Indiana
Well I'm not from there, but that was a nice attempt

I don't imagine you'll ever join the human race
It would surprise me if you did
I don't imagine you'll ever join the human race
Keep our number
Keep our number just in case

Did we the little people
Oh we all liked what you brought us
Everybody knows that you're a star
But we might love you if you walked down here a moment
And saw us as we are
Just saw us as we are

But I don't imagine you'll ever join the human race
And come down off your pyramid
I really don't imagine you'll ever join the human race
But keep that number
Keep our number just in case

I said something but you did not hear it
As you lit your American Spirit
And listened to the voice inside your head
