GOT IT IN SPADES

Description: Guitar

I'm a sorry excuse for a traveller on the road to paradise
Caught a glimpse of happiness up ahead and started thinking twice
Called in my lawyer to review my contract with bliss
And he said, "There are always several ways out of things like this"
And I said, "Then yes if you would, just please attend to the matter and send me the bill"

And the phone rang, it was Tony and he said, "I couldn't sleep last night
'Cos I've been told that you've been trying every shade of blue on till one fits you right
Walking like a widow with your eyes down on the street
Well the world it is your oyster and there's crackers at your feet"
And I said, "Yes of course but just my luck I've been allergic to shellfish my entire life"

And Tony says, "Louie, I hate to break the news
Louie, oh but you got it made
Louie, oh it's sad to say but true
That when it comes to the good life, you've got it in spades
You've got it in spades"

And then this morning every chorus of feminists was singing just how lucky I am
To be living in pursuit of something more than new initials for my monogram
They were singing hallelujah to the heroines we've known
To Amelia and Virginia, to Eleanor and Joan of Arc
And I of course stuffed cotton in my ears and went back to searching desperately through the personal ads

And then I went down to my P.O. box, and there was a note, it was in Tony's hand
And he said, "The way you gravitate towards shadows is a habit I can't understand
'Cos your soul is full of laughter and your smile is full of light
And there's not too much to fear this year from the religious right"
And he signed the note, "Love, Tony" and he drew a little moustache on the guy on the stamp

And Tony says, "Louie, oh I hate to break the news
Louie, ah but girl, you have got it made
Louie, oh it's sad to say but true
That when it comes to the good life, you've got it in spades
You've got it in spades
You've got it in spades
You've got it in
You've got it in spades"

I'm a sorry excuse for a traveller on the road to paradise
